Veronika Vlková is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic). Inspired by traditional Chinese painting during a study stay in China, she began to work in watercolours and with traditional Chinese scripts. Delicate, poetical watercolour painting and characteristic use of script have become her trademarks. Veronika Vlková and Jan Šrámek form a longstanding artists’ duo. In 2020, their work was selected for the Illustrators’ Exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, and they also won an award in the Illustrator of the Year category of the Czech Grand Design competition. Together, they have illustrated the books Apolline’s Blue Workshop/ Apolenka z modrotisku (2020, Hodonín Gallery of Fine Arts) and That’s the Metro, Man!/ To je metro, čeče, (2019, Paseka); the latter was named Most Beautiful Czech Book of the Year 2019 in the Children’s Books category. Veronika Vlková’s melancholy illustrations accompany the poems of Jan Zahradníček in the collection Jesus’s Little Shirt/ Ježíškova košilka (2017, Albatros).
